Progressive Stages of the Architectural Design Process

Designing a home involves several stages, which can be divided into phases within the architectural process. The first phase, known as the Program, focuses on understanding the client’s desires, plans, hopes, urgency, and budget—essentially the practical aspects of the design.

Following this, site visits are conducted, leading to the Preliminary Design phase. During the Preliminary Design phase, a few options for the home’s layout are presented, showcasing the arrangement of rooms and the flow within the future home. This step ensures that all desired aspects are included.

Once decisions are finalized, the project moves into the Design Development phase. Here, presentations include more detailed information, such as color choices, materials, appliances, windows, and doors, as well as specifications for height and size for all elements of the home.

Upon completion of the Design Development phase, the project enters the Construction Documents phase. This phase details and specifies everything required to communicate to the builder how to construct the structure. It includes detailed layouts, sections, framing information, materials schedules, and all necessary notes to satisfy building codes and Planning and Building departments to obtain permits.
